A professional educator, Dr. Todd Cherner specializes in developing digital pedagogies that combine the learning sciences and technologies to create innovative learning experiences for students of all ages. Cherner has developed rubrics to evaluate the quality of applications developed for educational purposes, which have been published as peer-reviewed articles and have been well received. Along with generative artificial intelligence, Cherner is passionate about using immersive technologies – virtual reality, augmented reality, and 360° videos – to engage students in content.
Cherner started his career as a high school English teacher, and literacy remains at the core of his work. He deeply believes that if students are to become engaged citizens, they need critical literacy skills. Cherner works to integrate critical skill-building activities within the learning experiences he designs, enabling students to learn the content as well as the life skills needed to be informed individuals.
Currently, Cherner is the Director of the Master of Arts in Educational Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has held prior appointments at Portland State University and Coastal Carolina University.
